IT'S GOT THAT MEATY SMELL

so do you think he did this in the projects as a message about society and class? is he drawing attention to a dirty secret being hidden right in front of our eyes in this city? or is it just a coincidence that he could get roof access there?

and my roommate, The Goddamn Rattlesnake, has a slew of shows coming up. . . including the big event of Swoon's solo debut at Deitch Projects. not to be missed, i'll be posting more about it later. in the meantime read this email and see why i like living with this guy.

holy moly. so. we got shows. mighty fine shows. big shows. damn. this rattlesnake is gonna be a busy bitch. we decided after the last show that we were going to take off time to finish recording the greatest record you have ever heard (its coming. chill.) and then we got ask to play a bunch of rad shows with even radder bands. we caved. and fortunately enough for you, you are welcome to join in our sweaty, drunken, foot stompin, sometimes pretty, usually ugly, always righteous, never sorry, possibly forgiving, quite cozy, seriously heart breakin, highly educational, down right visceral, often spiritual, probably honest and most definitely sexy, country music explosion. we taped up the tambourine, restrung the guitars, cleaned up the banjo, dried the harmonicas, wet the whistles, polished the kazoo, cracked our knuckles, kicked back our chairs, cleared our throats and sipped our beers just in time to blow your mind.

friday was Plan-it X Fest in brooklyn. so fun. i missed a good chunk of it due to Critical Mass though (see previous post). it's amazingly refreshing to be in a roomful of kids really psyched on great bands and being nice to each other. . . even if they are kinda smelly.

so Critical Mass ALMOST seemed like a full return to the old days. . . no cops, no harassment, a nice long leisurely ride (although with a few kamikaze suv taxies in the mix). that was until the end, when they started picking off stragglers with their scooters. apparently there was some chaos on the queens side of the 59th street bridge as well. reports were of cyclists being run into by cop cars and having to leave their wrecked bikes behind to avoid arrest. anyone witness this?

A HUNDRED WHEELS OF DEATH: THE BROOKLYN BIKE BRAWL
Saturday, June 25th, 2005

On the weekend before the final world championship race, bicycle gangs from all across america will converge on neutral turf in the neighborhood of Red Hook Brooklyn.  There, in front of the cranes and shipping yards, on one of the last true pieces of nyc waterfront, they will begin to trash their homemade frankenstein bikes in a free day of bike game blitz. There will be madness, blood and insane bikes for everyone to ride, and events for the stronger and crazier of you to join. Events that will include; flaming barenuckle tallbike jousting of death, the most hellish allmighty footdown, (drunk guy favorite) the bike toss, and MANY MORE!

This totally free event with free beer provided by the Brooklyn Brewery is being organized by a union of the oldest and craziest bicycle gangs America has yet produced. Including: Black Label Bike Club, Chunk 666, The Cutthroats, and who ever else hears about it and gets their ass down to New York. Organize your own gang and bring us a challenge!

Red hooks own madagascar institute will also be there terrorizing us for sport.

There will be an afterparty at the Hook with 5 live bands, 5 DJ's in the basement and a cheap backyard barbeque.

HILTON SUMMER-TIME

Hello everyone!
I once introduced myself and here's part II.
I'm in a band that is growin' as I post this. It all started like an excuse to meet and drink, maybe that's why there's 8 person together on it... We've never spected anything from this band so we named it with a silly name (Cansei de ser Sexy/Tired of being sexy)(oh yeah... quoted from a Beyonce's interview)...and even like this, you know... being silly, wearin' pijamas and writin' music for Paris Hilton, we've played for 5000 people at the same stage from Kraftwerk, hanged out with Bobby Gillespie AND just signed with one AMAZING Record label in Brasil who are sweethearts and gives us total control of everything & anything we do!
Our first HIT was this music "Meetin' Paris Hilton" that lots of people relate with "Paris Hilton" from Mu. I honestly like my track better and don't think it should be related just cuz the tittle's there's the same person involved. It's pretty damn different. But I do like the way she dances like a chicken (not Paris, Mu).
But why am I tellin' all this if I'm not even gonna post some mp3 from my band?
Cuz our track "Meetin' Paris Hilton" never got so close from the Hilton herself... it is featured with the promo for Simple Life in the whole Latin America... how great is this?! My mom don't know who Paris is, but she is happy.

I think it must be something old for you... cuz someone from this band can be a co-worker, or neighbor, or close friend... if so, good for you.. and I'm not being ironic. I really mean it! Wish it was me ... Cuz this BAND is one of the coolest things I heard in a long time... I love the shark section from they're website... it's just the best. I love that all of them sing. I love they're videos too. AND they are big hearted... cuz you can download most of they're two EP's + the cover art...Allright, Breaker!Breaker!: I have feelings for you. Can I take you out?

so in the past 72 hours, i have slept for four. the shoot last night was an bonafide all-nighter (and my assistant dragged her poor boyfriend to it, not knowing what he was getting in to). i was so out of it this morning that i couldn't find my way out of the subway. . . at my usual stop for work. . . and it only has two exits.

in a very heavily related note, i won't be at my usual desk job after today. . . for a very long while. so posting may get more sporadic, or more interesting, or both. who knows. but i have a feeling Covers Comp #4 will be dropping soon. . . so start salivating now.

tomorrow morning = memorial/awareness bike ride. get up early-ish (starts in park slope at 8 am), don't be a lazy slug. it'll be a mini Critcal Mass, what better way to start your day? nothing is going to change if we don't do something to raise awareness. . . and this is supported by all the organizations that are working to keep you and your friends safe and alive.

NYC Cyclists Demand Protection from Deadly Traffic.
Ride from Crash Scene to City Hall.

At 8 am on Thursday, June 16 cyclists representing an alliance of New York City bicycle groups will embark on a Vigil Ride from 5th Avenue and Warren Street in Brooklyn to the steps of City Hall to memorialize Elizabeth Padilla, Brandie Bailey, Jerome Allen and the 201 other NYC bicyclists killed since 1995.

"The sheer volume of vehicles and the heedlessness of drivers leave no room for error on these streets. For cycling to be safe, the City must create more greenways and protected, on-street bike lanes," says Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives. "Bike routes must be at least 5-feet wide with a 2-foot buffer between the bike lane and motorized traffic," says White.

At City Hall at 9 am the alliance will lay down flowers in memory of the 204 fallen cyclists and ask Mayor Bloomberg to convene a multi-agency task force to develop -- in cooperation with the NYC cycling community -- an action plan to prevent further deaths and injuries.

According to data recently release by the NYPD, 9 cyclists have perished in crashes this year, representing a 50% increase in fatalities over the same period in 2004. In the past six weeks, bicyclists Jerome Allen, Brandie Bailey and Elizabeth Padilla were fatally struck by motorists: Jerome, 59, banking administrator, was hit from behind by an SUV on Hylan Boulevard in Staten Island on April 26; Brandie, 21, waitress, was struck by a private sanitation truck on Ave. A in Manhattan on May 10; Elizabeth, 28, attorney, was crushed by a large delivery truck on 5th Ave. and Warren St. in Park Slope on June 9.

All three crashes occurred on streets that carry increasing numbers of cyclists. Two of the three streets -- Hylan Boulevard and north 5th Avenue -- are "recommended bike routes" according to the 2005 NYC Cycling Map published by the City of New York. Yet all three streets, bereft of bicycle lanes, force bicyclists to compete for space with cars and trucks.

"It's time for the NYPD to stop coddling drivers who infringe on cyclists' lawful right to the road," says Charles Komanoff, co-ordinator of the traffic-safety group Right Of Way. "State and city traffic law are full of provisions intended to protect safe cycling, yet virtually none of them are ever enforced," Komanoff says.

An alliance of Transportation Alternatives, Time's Up!, Right Of Way, the New York City Bicycle Messenger Association, and FreeWheels ask Mayor Bloomberg to convene a task force of the Departments of Transportation, Health, Police, City Planning and Parks to develop an action plan to prevent further deaths and injuries to bicyclists.

At the rally, on the steps of City Hall, the alliance will unveil their recommendations for the action plan, which include: rigorous analysis of all cyclist fatalities over the past decade; expansion of the city's personnel capacity to plan and build bicycle facilities; stronger design standards for safe streets; introduction of 15 mph streets; changes to the city traffic rules to prevent "dooring" incidents; public education of motorists as to cyclists' rights and drivers' responsibilities; a requirement to retrofit large trucks with side guards; prioritization of bike routes for inspection, pothole filling and hazard elimination.

When you like something you try to know the things that surround this thing right? If you appreciate the sun you gotta know the planets around the big yellow ball to plan some visits. But I'm not that much into thiskindathing so I don't search for it. But I'm into Death from Above 1979 A LOT. Have you ever listened to anything from MSTRKRFT? I'm excited cuz they (JFK - DFA79 + Al.P - Girls Are Short) are openin' a studio just for this project. They're RMXs, for me, are better then the original tracks. It's not just a Remix, more like rebuild. So, changin' the subject so that it links with my mp3, I search all the bands that opens for them. I know Toronto's Uncut was tourin' with them for the last gigs in Sweden and Japan.
I like how this track starts with the bass line... but the industrial-ish rock guitar got me on. I remembered of myself playin' air guitar in my hometown bedroom while listenin' to rob and white zombie. If only that guitar was real.

MAIN QUALIFICATION: BEING A GOOD CASUALTY

deathcountry-sm.jpg
Poor Boy Johnson performing at Trash Bar this past tuesday. apparently the headliners, No Things (ex-Liars) didn't end up hardly playing at all cause they got into a fight with the sound guy (who was a bit of a jerk). oh well. forget Rock-n-Roll, it's all about Death Country now.

for those of you who didn't come to Freak Da Tables last night, it was fun. great music, a mini-booty dance floor, and naked-lady art everywhere. not bad for a balmy wednesday night.

and i just got a report that another biker was killed by a truck on 5th ave in park slope this morning. it just seems like lambs to the slaughter sometimes. why should you be able to take a life and just shrug it off as "oops, it was an accident." why does carelessness and ineptitude behind the wheel exempt you from manslaughter? why are cyclists considered to be acceptable casualties of rush hour? why do people think it is some god-given right to operate a vehicle, no matter how badly, and not be held accountable? oh right. . . cyclists are considered "other" by the powers that be. duh.

my roommate turned me on to the Two Gallants. they hail from san fran, but sound more like something conjured up from the old west meeting the delta blues. the duo are both about 22, but their music shows them to be emotionally wise beyond their years. the gypsy band playing a sunday night serenade last weekend down on the soon-to-be-extinct williamsburg waterfront (and yes, they do have a washboard player and someone playing the saw). they also played at the previously-posted rooftop slip-n-slide party. i actually was so psyched on their rendition of "You Are My Sunshine" that i recorded it with my camera. it's kind of a funny video cause it starts off while i am still sitting with some friends who had been lighting off fireworks on each other. but the music drew me away, so you'll notice that it gets clearer and louder. oh yeah, and the whole thing is pretty much pitch-black because that's how it was on the roof. hopefully you will find it at least mildly amusing/interesting.

So, there's this guy, called Adriano Cintra aka "DrixxxVandalixxx" n' "Meus Dedos Sujos" (My Dirty Fingers -- I know you have a Dirty Fingers somewhere around there in NY, but it is São Paulo so it's a total different thing)
Adriano is so talented, so-damn-talented that he can never get enuff, so he is always comin' up with other bands... so far there is: Thee Butcher's orchestra, Verafisher, Caxabaxa, The Iwannadrinks , Ultrasom and Cansei de ser Sexy. Plus his solo projects wich sometimes is a secret thing, mash-ups, bastards and production for other independent bands. Fortunelly I'm with him in Cansei de ser sexy (which Sucka posted somewhere in the past and I'll post more soon) and Caxabaxa (where I'm not totally there but been at-one-rehearsal-sometime-in-a-past-not-so-far-from-today.)
I'll post all his bands, cuz they are all great!
Ultrasom is pretty much about revenge or relationships that melted down by the time and distance (and some other ugly shit).
In these last recordings each song is one person; and it IS about revenge, but it is so damn good, I wouldn't mind being one of them...even if my darkest side became a chorus. This is what you get when you mess around with trully special people.

so i kind of feel like i need to make up an excuse to post this. it's not hot and dirty dance music, it's not crazy shredding thrash punk, it's not even a chill summer jam. admittedly it is not overtly season-appropriate. but whatever, it's for those quiet sunday mornings where you have a bit of that hit-by-a-train feeling from the weekend and still have to get moving. . . just slowly. it's a track from Regina Spektor's latest album, Soviet Kitsch. it's fun, it's catchy, it's playful, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. i could draw some parallels with the title and/or lyrics to this, that, or the other thing. . . but i'll just leave that all up to you. maybe i just really love hearing someone chanting "you're so goddamn young" in my head after my recent birthday.

so an old friend of mine is touring with her band Mika Bomb. they land in brooklyn tomorrow (tuesday) at Trash Bar (the old Luxx) on grand st. in williamsburg. they're playing with No Things (formerly of The Liars), Poorboy Johnson & The Goddamn Rattlesnake, and Brasilia. sounds like a pretty good bill to me. Mika Bomb are punky-poppy-asian-fetishized-grrrl-rock. check out the tracks below and then go enjoy a fun brooklyn-summer show.
