BLOW YOUR COVER

messengerflag.jpg

hope you had a good turkey day. i enjoyed the warm weirdness that is south florida. trailer parks are really great for at least one thing. . . doing nothing. (although i did help my grandma clean out underneath the trailer and do some landscaping, so i wasn't totally lazy) but a boston market thanksgiving dinner does leave a little to be desired, i have to say.

Critical Mass rode on friday. it was another round of "cops-must-have-small-penises-to-be-such-big-dicks." although the tone was different this time. the usual route up to grand central was barricaded with the ever-popular orange netting. people were told that ANYONE riding in a group would be arrested, not just if they broke traffic laws. and arrests were made, after the ride broke up into smaller sections. the nypd officially declared the act of Critical Mass a sufficient crime for arrest and bicycle confiscation, even though this issue has already been through the courts and was decided in favor of the riders. just another example of how the nypd is above the law. the usual case of "who polices the police?" checks and balances my ass.

i usually don't go for Belle & Sebastian. way too limp for me. and when i am in the mood for that sort of thing, i tend to reach for the Serge Gainsbourge first. BUT this track caught me off guard and impressed the hell out of me. i understand better how they implement the huge array of instruments and musicians during their live shows. i don't know if B&S are turning it up a notch, or if this is just a happy lil' fluke. either way i am diggin' it.

TIRED OF BEING SEXY

party02
cssdrawing.jpg

photo by me. "CSS" drawing by Lovefoxxx.

so a bike messenger was killed yesterday morning when he was doored on 8th ave at 49th street. there will be a memorial ride today (friday, the 19th) at 6 pm at 49th and 8th ave. i know this is short notice, but if you have your bike in the city, try to be there. riding in the city is ridiculously dangerous, in a large part due to people's lack of consideration. i can't count the number of times i have narrowly dodged a door or in some cases even had to deflect it. studies have shown that with the increase of the number of bike riders, the number of accidents goes down. why? because people are more aware of the cyclists, so they are more careful. that is why group rides (yes, like Critical Mass) are so important. they turn the usual handful of delivery guys and messengers people are used to not noticing into a very obvious group. it gets a lot of people's attention, and in most cases that i have encountered, people are excited, surprised, and pleased by it. during the last critical mass (october), i was photographing people being arrested for riding their bikes. a large man (think "teamster" and you know what i mean) walked up to me and asked what was going on. i explained that every month there is a group bike ride for bike awareness and to promote alternatives to cars for transportation. however since august the police have been harassing the ride and arresting people. he then asked me "but what did they do to get arrested?" i replied, "rode their bikes in a group." he looked so pissed-off i was a bit surprised and even took a step back. he was swearing and muttering looking around at all the cops. then he paused, looked me straight in the face, and said "that's just really, really, sad." he walked away staring at the cops and shaking his head. the last time i saw someone that mad during a group bike ride was this bald guy who got out of his mercedes and was threatening to break people's necks for blocking his car. saying something like "yeah? call the cops! they'll thank me for breakin' your stupid neck! they'll probably help!" we seriously thought he was going to have a stroke right there. so i guess its nice to know that the sentiment at least goes both ways with non-bike riders. . . well, sometimes anyway.

i'm out of here for a week, no internets where i am headed. see you when i get back.

atlanta might be south of nyc (see previous post), but brazil is a hell of a lot farther down than that. haven't made it that far yet, but i'm workin' on it. one of the reasons for a trip to Sao Paulo is Cansei De Ser Sexy (Tired Of Being Sexy). i'm not exactly sure how to describe them, but i'll try anyway. think dancy-punky-shouty-electroish tracks that get you you to pogo as much as hump the person's leg next to you. . . in cute accented english from a cute (but edgy) little girl. i think they are blowing up in brazil, my friend was telling me about a show they played on mtv down there, and they've also been playing some of those big outdoor festivals with other big international acts. so who knows, you might be hearing them pop up in the US in the next few years. i'm not going to wait that long. . . i don't think they have an official release yet. these tracks are from a sample cd my friend sent me of what they had so far. i have no idea how "finished" they are, but they are great nonetheless. if you're not gettin' dirty, you're not having fun.

so i went to see a film program curated by a friend of mine at Eyebeam last night. it was called "How To Be A Canadian." so in a continuation, i am posting my favorite track off the new Tegan & Sara album "So Jealous." they are canadians, by the way. i'm still a bit shocked that in my 2 weeks in vancouver this summer, no one mentioned them to me. i had to get back to nyc to hear about this duo (and one of them lives in vancouver too). on a side note, this is the first band whose live bootlegs have made me want to see them even more. their on-stage banter is very personable, lighthearted and amusing. i would definitely recommend catching them live on their coming/current tour.

as fall quickly slips away into winter, i thought i'd throw something up that seemed appropriate, at least on one level. . . my personal listening habits are severely seasonally driven. and although this is by far not a very "fall" song for me (more late spring/summer). the name alone gives me a good enough excuse, i think. !!! are a bunch of dudes who play some of the most interesting dance music out there. since it seems like every other new band popping, great as they may be, is hell bent on bringing dancing back to the indie/rock scene. . . i think it's important to note one of the bands that has been doing this since back when it was weird. "dance music? at an indie rock show? what the hell? are those really horns???" !!! have been around since 1996 and came to brooklyn by way of sacramento, although i think some of the members still reside on the sunnier coast. word is that they started as just a party band, and then kind of took off. some of !!!'s members also play in Outhud as well, another slightly-similarly-sounding band, but definitely not interchangeable by any means. i'm a big fan of !!!'s first album, and haven't quite gotten as hooked on their last one. Outhud's latest effort is pretty damn good and gets it's fair turn on my record player. this particular track is not my favorite off the first !!! album, but again, we're working with the song name here. . . so yeah, turn it on and whip yourself into a sweaty frenzy dancing like a maniac around your bedroom. !!! wouldn't want it any other way.

on a side note. . . is it me or has anyone else noticed that the big new U2 single "Vertigo" (used in the slew of new-ish ipod tv spots) is a bit off? "Uno! (one), Dos! (two), Tres! (three). . . Catorce! caring is sharing. . .

wefucked

below is a take on the election/post-election from someone that is/was definitely less politically opinionated than i am. and that's what makes what he has to say more interesting. if even your average non-political joe smells something rotten here, it's gotta be pretty bad. and on a side note, a lot of the "stories" i'd been hearing about "voting problems" are actually starting to surface in the mainstream news (see blake's #2). . . guess we're not always paranoid afterall.

and on his #5, i heard a personal story from someone this happened to in austin, TX.

******************************************************************

Hey y'all. Blake here. If yer a friend, do me a favor and take five minutes to read this. It's not some forwarded junk. It's from me personally.

You all know me. I'm not terribly political. I like ice cream and internet poker. In December 2003, I didn't know who was running for president and didn't care. Politics is bullshit, and the only winners are the politicians themselves, I thought.

I felt our president's apparent lack of intelligence, class, and statesmanship was more of an embarassment to our nation than a threat. I credit my brother for getting me innarested. I decided to try Democracy for a year (as young people are wont to do). I stayed informed, registered to vote, gave money to John "Droopy Ass" Kerry and the Democratic Party on many occasions (even though I am not registered to any party), volunteered to phone bank and what not, and cast my vote in Queens on Tuesday.

When the results came in, I said: "Well, fuck this", enjoyed a day of nihilism, and went back to playing internet poker and not caring. Then I thought about something. If the fucking Boston Red Sox could do something that no team has ever done in baseball history, beating the Yankees in four straight games after being down 3-0, to go on and win their first World Series in 86 years, how could we as a nation not get rid of a president with a sub 50% approval rating, who was just barely elected the first time (maybe not at all depending on who you ask ), who even he would have to admit is hated by about half the nation, despite record breaking voter turnout? Curt Schilling is great, but not THAT great. You can feel it in the universe, it just doesn't quite add up. So here's some facts I learned in the past 24 hours I thought I'd pass on, some of them I already knew.

1. Wallace O' Dell, C.E.O. of Diebold, makers of the nation's electronic voting machines, is an open Bush supporter, has given massive amounts of money to his campaign, and has been QUOTED as saying he would 'deliver Ohio's electoral votes to George W. Bush'.

2. News reports today confirm that a county in Columbus, Ohio showed its county's votes as being divided up as 4,258 for Bush and 260 for Kerry when there are actually only 638 registered voters in the county. The actual number was closer to an even split for both.

3. Exit polls in Florida, Ohio, and New Mexico (states that all employed Diebold's machines) show an almost exact opposite advantage as the final votes reported (e.g. an exit poll might have showed Kerry 52% to Bush 47%, only to have the final vote come out opposite). While many of these exit polls were dismissed as inaccurate and without merit, most states' exit polls WERE accurate, and the supposedly inaccurate ones were nonetheless CHANGED at about 2am election night to reflect 'better accuracy' with the final vote.

4. Chuck Hagel became the first Republican Senator in Nebraska's history after his final act of business as the C.E.O. of his own electronic voting machine company: selling his machines to the state of Nebraska.

5. There have been numerous reports of people voting a straight democratic ticket on voting machines, only to have their votes come up for review showing the "Bush/Cheney" selected.

6. These machines have no paper trail, and have never been subjected to a single audit. A bill sponsored by New Jersey congressman Rush Holt to make it neccessary for them to have a paper trail, gained a majority of the house's support (that means Republicans and Democrats alike, dig?) but was never brought to a vote by Majority leader Tom Delay and speaker Denny Hastert.

7.!!! HOW MANY OF US OWN A COMPUTER AND HAVE NEVER HAD A
UNEXPLAINED PROBLEM WITH IT???!!!??

If you are still my friend and any of this has had any impact on you, you should:

1. Please, please go to www.blackboxvoting.org (NOT ".COM"!!) They are trying to subpoena an audit for the machines, and are involved in the largest Freedom of Information act in history to get records, memos, transcripts, software info on these machines. They are trying to get hard evidence of voter fraud. Give them money if you feel like it. It's for truth, not politics, get it?

2. Write to the media and/or your congressperson. Try to get them to pick up the story. They've blown most evrything else (the media, not the congress people).

3. Fax Ralph Nader. If yer like me and you think Ralph is kinda a
silly little bastard, don't fret. This is the kinda stuff he does well and has built his name on. He is trying to organize a recount of New Hampshire on allegations of voter fraud. If that works, theoretically 34 states could follow. Fax him at: 202-265-0092. Write: "Ralph, please challenge the election results in New Hampshire now. (sign your name) Blackboxvoting.org, activist". You may wanna leave this one alone, you may not.

4. Forward this email to people you think are your friends and care what you have to say.

5. Raise hell. (???)

Notice that in all of this I haven't said John Kerry actually won.

Although I still believe he'd make the better president, his campaign wasn't great, he didn't seem to reach a lot of the common people of the nation, and if it comes out in the end that it was all legit, so be it. But as for now, millions of people have basically voted into outerspace, and wouldn't you rather know if America was invloved in the greatest fraud in the history of mankind?

A concession speech is not legally binding, and election results are challengeable up to 10 days after the election. If nothing's changed, that's when my faith in democracy (and yours too) should expire. We'll all hop on a nice, fucking upholstered bus to Vancouver and play some internet poker. Til then, try, okay?

the amazing stupidity of my fellow americans baffles the crap out of me. i guess we get what we deserve. america could easily be taken over by another country, if they just told us it was for our own protection.

VOTE or DIE. . .

robertflag
G W Bush with his, and i quote, "one-fingered victory salute."

see it here: what Bush thinks of you

"Hey!! Stop what you're doing! You're not going to find that Arcade Fire live bootleg today, nor will you be stumbling across the b-side to "Hand In Glove", and there's no way you'll be finding that unreleased Pixies album. What you need to do is get ready to vote in the most important election of our lives. Figure out where your nearest polling place is and make sure you are registered. Tell your friends to vote, tell your family, tell your enemies for that matter. . ." unless of coures they are going to vote for Bush. in that case tell them that the polls will still be open on nov. 3rd and they should wait till then to avoid the crowds.

seriously, this election is going to be one giant example of corruption and deception. it's going to make 2000 look like a mild case of miscommunication. it's already happening, and has been for over a month. i can't even begin to cite the dozens of attempts to stop Democratic voters from having their voices heard this year. the Republicans are scared. scared they are about to lose power, the power that they have been so blatantly abusing. they are scared because they know that they are the minority in this country, and are outdated as well. the younger generations are not falling for their reactionary ideas, and their policy of ruling by fear is not going to hold up much longer. but if they do succeed this year, the effects of their harmful policies will be felt for generations. the damage that has been done already will take at least most of my lifetime to undo. we cannot afford to be threatened and scared back into four more years of the most blatantly incompetent and greedy administration in history.

okay, and on that note, two questions for you today (leave responses in the comments):
-- how does Clinton barely escape impeachment for lying about a blowjob, and yet the term doesn't even surface when Bush lies about our reasons for going to war, sacrificing over 1000 US lives, and taking over another sovereign nation?
-- How can Americans, even with our tendency for stubbornness, not notice that practically 99% of the world now strongly dislikes us and believes we are dangerous? how can that not be a clue that, perhaps, one man can be wrong?

okay, back to Craig's post:

"Worried that you're not informed enough to vote? You're on the internet - the information is out there waiting for you. Not a U.S. citizen? Then please call or email all your American friends and make sure they plan on voting.
